Hi! I've been playing OoT since I was a fetus. I have a sexy Super Mario World editor called Lunar Magic that I've spent countless hours playing around in, and the other day it hit me- might there be an easy editor for OoT too!? ..looks like there isn't.. but I'm willing to give it a shot if I can get help from this wonderful community. I've used Neverwinter Nights' campaign builder, as well as RPG Maker- both pretty in depth. Buuuut I haven't done any raw scripting to speak of. So, question: if I'd be content just to remix OoT and make my own Master Quest instead of building dungeons from scratch, how brutal of a learning curve would I be looking at for just that? I'd like to add/move objects like chests, enemies, and torches, change when and where you acquire certain items, and set new conditions. By conditions I mean something like light those two torches to get this door to open, and kill all the enemies in this room to get a key, etc. I'm sure that would require scripting, no? Thanks for your time and thanks in advance for any answers!

Hello and welcome to Maco! My first suggestion would be to go to the downloads and get Hylian Toolbox. This will be a very useful tool. Because a lot of information is involved in what you plan on doing, I would suggest going to the forums. Click on either Zelda Modding or Zelda Tutorials (both have stuff to do with actors). Try to find the guides that you are looking for. An example would be here-

You may have to download some programs, but once you get used to it, it really is not that hard. If you are stuck somewhere, can't find anything on the tutorials, or have any issues, then feel free to post a new topic. The other members here are friendly and help out when they can. Thanks for the responses! I can't start modding until I get my new computer- which'll probably be a paycheck from now- but I'm already studying the pages you guys sent me. I'm aiming to learn the terminology if nothing else. A lot of it I'll probably have to do to really understand and remember. I wish I could just sit down with one of you for an hour and have you explain stuff once I'm actually in the program, alas.. I'll put in the hours to figure everything out like you guys did. I have a couple more questions, if you don't mind. I'm trying to get a good idea of what I can do before I start planning anything.

I saw elsewhere that most everyone uses the debug version of the game for modding. Is this required, or is this because it's easier to access any area when testing? If I eventually decided to "remix" the whole game, I would want the player to start at the beginning and work through it, obviously, instead of just selecting some temples to beat. Also, aren't the graphics all glitchy and crazy in the debug version? If people just use the debug so they can select areas easily, then.. could I have a bunch of save states in the non-debug version and just use them?

(Let me know if I should be posted this kind of stuff in a different board.. I figured since this was the introduction board and I'm asking newbie questions and not specific ones it made sense..)

OoT really is easier than MM, but...

A Majora's Mask: Master Quest would be awesome.

I'm not sure how different modding each one is.

About the debug, you can make it not have the debug features so players would have to play the game. When you begin to understand hex editing, look at this guide-

As some of you may know, I have left the rom editing scene, never to return. I will be attending UNL. I will also be getting a job, so I will not have the time to run a community and make all of these projects.

I'm leaving you all in good hands. Sylux102, one of the best Maco staff members, will be carrying on in my stead. His forums are on Zelda64.net. Register there, since this website is archive only.

As for OoT 2D and Izou, I will be leaving those in the hands of GodsTurf's team, Lunar World. If you are fans of these projects, subscribe to them.
